Mayoral Profile: Jackie Green
WDRB TV - Fox News
By Bennett Haeberle; March 17, 2010
Jackie Green won't hesitate to tell you he's a bike enthusiast. He owns three bike shops.
It's fitting for a man fixed on transportation issues. A man who wants to be Louisville's next mayor.
"The short answer is I'm not pleased with where the other candidates will take Louisville," he said.
Green says whoever is elected could be left facing an energy crisis and a broken transportation system. When asked if the other candidates were ignoring that issue, Green said:
"I don't know that they are ignoring it but I don't know that they have the same vision and want to go in the same direction that I have."
He says TARC (Transit Authority of River City) is grossly under funded.
If elected, he would make Louisville streets more "bike and pedestrian" friendly. He also wants to commit resources to building light rail trains ahead of the bridges project.
"The other candidates are committed to spending $2 billion plus on expanding, moving and building new interstates and Ohio River Bridges... one or two. We don't have that kind of money to begin with."
He spoke out against the Ohio River Bridges Project at the bi-state bridge authority's first meeting.
'"The tolls are going to radically change the equation," Green said. "And to think that we are going to pay for those bridges with tolls is folly."
But what about the other issues a mayor is faced with?
BH: "Do you think you will be to handle those issues? The police issues, the fire boards, the other cabinets, the other departments?"
JG: "With the help of Metro department heads, and their staff, yes."
Green lacks political experience but says Louisville doesn't need a political operator.
He's running with little money as an independent - a maneuver that guarantees him a spot in the general election.
He says another candidate he is friends with recently told him they shouldn't talk to each other.
"Will it turn ugly? I hope not. Has our campaign already made a difference? Most definitely. It has his attention. And it has a lot attention of others. Wait til this summer, if gas prices spike, our platform is going to be much more attractive to people."
