Louisville mayoral candidates' first debate
WDRB 41 - June 24, 2010
The two major candidates for mayor of Louisville shared a stage Thursday for the first time since the primary.
The debate was sponsored by the local homebuilder's association, so many of the questions were about economic development and the planning and zoning process.
Several hundred people were on hand to watch the two candidates, Republican Hal Heiner and Democrat Greg Fischer, answer twelve questions they had been provided in advance. They could not ask each other questions, nor did they take questions from the audience.
Fischer says he would be an advocate for expanded gaming. Heiner prefers to let the people decide in a referendum. Both agreed that the planning and zoning process needs to be streamlined, and both say adding jobs in the community is their top priority.
"In the good times, 2000 and 2008, our region -- we actually lost jobs, when the cities around us, those economic regions, were gaining tens of thousands of new jobs," Heiner said. "And we will not remain the great city that we have been if we do not grow jobs."
Fischer said, "Your next mayor should be judged on his ability to grow jobs. And as I said earlier, I'm a lifelong entrepreneur and jobs creator, and I wake up in the morning thinking about jobs, I go to sleep at night thinking about jobs, so that's what I'll do as mayor.
If Thursday morning's debate is any indication, the two candidates agree on most of the issues. The independent candidate for mayor, Jackie Green, was at the debate but was not invited to participate.
The debate was moderated by Fox 41 President and General Manager Bill Lamb.
